About us

The Geographical Society of Northern Finland (PSMS) has been an integral part of the geographical identity of Northern Finland since 1963. In accordance with its objectives, the Society aims to promote interaction between geographers in Northern Finland, the dissemination of geographical knowledge and accessibility within the academic community and among its members. In addition, the Association aims to raise awareness of geography and geographical knowledge in Northern Finland and to contribute to the social debate on important and topical geographical issues.

The society's activities include organizing meetings, various discussion and presentation events, excursions and trips, and publishing activities. It may also award grants and scholarships for students. It organizes events and cooperates with other scientific societies. The PSMS is a member of the Federation of the Finnish Learned Societies. Tieteellisten seurain valtuuskunnan jäsen.

Our Board has traditionally included staff from the Department of Geography at the University of Oulu, as well as student members and geographers working outside the department. The Geographical Society of Northern Finland has about 50 members.
